A tweet has just caused me to remember when I spent 2015 to 2017 intermittently reading all of Iris Murdoch's novels. What fun. I laughed a lot. I cried once (Good Apprentice). The best reading project I have ever done. She is fantastic.

It's odd, and almost not reconcile able. Iris Murdoch was born in Ireland. She sounds mildly Irish, in a nicely Protestant way. I got a first doing a dissertation on Iris Murdoch - I love her writing, one of the great writers of 'these islands '.

The Flight from the Enchanter by Iris Murdoch, with a dust jacket by Edward Bawden and a bookplate by Anton Pieck was bought in a bookshop in Amsterdam and will return to the UK.
