Invitation - Portmana Public Engagement Evening
Galway County Council & Coillte are inviting the public to a major public consultation event on Tuesday evening (October 24th) from 6-9pm at the Irish Workhouse Centre Portumna.
All members of the community are encouraged to attend

📣 There will be no tours of the Workhouse running this Saturday, September 30th 2023, as we are hosting our annual conference.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Tours will resume as normal on Sunday, October 1st.

I’ll be there, looking at the smallpox epidemic of 1871-72 in #Mohill incl vaccination, taking defaulting parents to court, paying inmates, and doctors’ negotiation for higher pay.

Really looking forward to presenting on nineteenth-century lunacy legislation and district asylums at this event. My Maynooth History Maynooth University colleague Eamon Healy who will be there also presenting ‘Vice Guardians – examining the forgotten custodians of the Famine Poor 1847-51

I may be biased but I'm very excited about the lineup, and the discussions to be had after the talks. I'm particularly looking forward to learning more about Helen Doyle and Fiona Slevin research in a few days Irish Workhouse Centre Portumna

Some further updates: The Night Tour of the Workhouse scheduled to run on August 13th, as well as the Bilingual Tour of the Workhouse scheduled to run on August 12th have been cancelled, due to unforeseen circumstances.
