Well, they finally got me! After nearly 9 years at VICE and somehow dodging layoff after layoff (10+ I think?) it'll be over for me in May. They're letting me finish my last documentary and then I'm out. Gonna save my sentimental words for a later time. Need to gather my thoughts

Well, I knew it was coming. But it's finally here. I just received notice that VICE will be letting me go on April 5th.

One of my colleagues got a notice he was being laid off today and was booted out of the system within 10 minutes. He was in the middle of finishing up graphics for a doc that will air in a few weeks. We were gchatting with him about edits, and then he was gone.

VICE booted my colleague from the system ten minutes after telling him he's getting laid off. We were in the middle of chatting about gfx revisions for a documentary edit that's due tonight. Just out mid-chat without a warning.

waiting for an email and a person you've probably never met to tell you you're redundant after almost 9 years of busting your ass. truly dystopian lol

I am increasingly convinced that worker-owned sites like 404/Defector/Aftermath are the only way forward for independent web-based journalism. Tech companies/VCs don't care about you, newsletters are cults of personality where the focus is you. Worker-owned hits the sweet spot

Just incredible. The CEO of VICE is giving up on one of the most popular global media brands, firing its journalists and shutting down Vice.com in order to 'transition to a studio model' which means... what? Posting brand stuff to Instagram?

so when are they going to start laying off all the useless media executives whose bad business decisions keep tanking beloved publications instead of axing the workers who create all of the actual value

lol today I found myself translating an Arabic interview for 7 different journalists at a press scrum. That’s because 7 different news organizations didn’t bother sending a goddamn Arabic speaker to the Middle East. We need to decolonize the media. The system is broken.
