🚨Just minutes ago the Senate voted to bring the expanded FISA bill to the floor for consideration. Full Senate vote on this bill to expand the government's warrantless surveillance power is coming in the next day or two. I'll be working down to the wire to stop it.

Schumer says he’ll file cloture on FISA 702 reauthorization today, setting up a Thursday vote to break first filibuster. Will need 60 β€” and then an agreement on debate and amendments to avoid Saturday lapse in the program

This Andrew Perez & Asawin Suebsaeng report in Rolling Stone focuses on the key issue about the FISA 702 bill and its House Intel 'Super Snooper' amendment:
It allows warrantless taps of commercial real-estate, which put media headquarters at prime risk of abuse

Clarifier needed here: The law expires Friday, but the government just received a new certification, meaning actual authority to conduct FISA 702 surveillance does not expire until April 2025
Friday is an artificial deadline & leadership is giving it focus to avoid a floor debate

Key context debunking this ticking clock claim: The government just got a new 702 certification that goes all the way to April 2025
Why are Chuck Schumer & Leader McConnell rushing to follow an artificial deadline instead of taking a couple days to fix major problems with the bill?

The House FISA bill as it stands would turn ordinary businesses into NSA spies. This will mean a MASSIVE expansion of the surveillance state.

The House is poised to consider the this week, which would close the data broker loophole.

This is a can't-miss chance to be on the side of civil liberties.

Can we rely on you to call your Congressmember and ask them to ?

This bill represents one of the most dramatic and terrifying expansions of government surveillance authority in history. I will do everything in my power to stop it from passing in the Senate.

A huge amount of gratitude is due to Joaquin Castro for his votes today - in contrast most Intelligence Committee members he voted for the warrant rule and against expansions of FISA 702.
A strong stand for civil rights and civil liberties.

β€œThe Speaker doesn’t always vote in the House, but he was the tie breaker today. He voted against warrants.”

That may not bode well for Johnson as he faces a motion to vacate threat πŸ‘€

Keep in mind any one of these votes would have been enough to get it passed. Johnson voted FOR this measure last time it came up for a floor vote before he was Speaker

The Judiciary Committee vote on a version of FISA reform with warrants on back door searches of US persons was 35-2.
If it stayed that way, the base bill would have had warrants.

These members not only voted for a warrant ruling during prior FISA 702 reauthorizations, they voted for a warrant FOUR MONTHS AGO in Committee.
A jaw dropping flip-flop that cost Americans' an important civil rights and civil liberties protection
