#OTD 1916, James Connolly was seriously injured while directing operations during the Rising in Middle Abbey Street

The injuries to his leg meant he was unable to stand and had to be strapped to a chair before being executed on 12th May

We were delighted to participate and support the Moore Street Preservation Trust conference today held in the historic and significant GPO where an ambitious and achievable vision was presented.

#OTD 1916, Pearse read the Proclamation from the steps of the GPO

‘Irishmen and Irishwomen: In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strike for her freedom.’

#OnThisDay in 1916 the Easter Rising took place in Dublin

On the steps of the GPO Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation. At his side stood James Connolly.

As the tricolour was hoisted above the GPO, Connolly was heard to remark to onlookers:

‘Isn’t it grand?’
