I remember hearing something like, if as a social scientist you can't think of 4-5 alternative explanations for a finding then you're probably in the wrong business. Source?

Well, it seems the results in the annex are way more nuanced than the authors Jørgen Carling make it sound. IN some locations the effects are Zero, in some negative and some also positive.

A very positive development in Europe and I don't think this has been reported much in the media during the last few decades.

The suicide rates among young people declined in many European countries.

'If you're under 25 your brain isn't fully developed, so you can't be trusted to make informed decisions'

I'm seeing this a LOT lately, especially today. And it's utter guff, based on hearsay, misunderstandings of neuroscience, or wilful ignorance.

Why? I'll tell you why

Unfortunate so many still see the Indo-Pacific tilt as a Brexit symbol to be torn down. Yes, its origins lie there. But analysis of indivisibility btwn Euro-Atlantic & IP was and remains correct. Retreating from IP will replicate 2016-20 mistakes (ignoring EU) again, in reverse.

Tomorrow the European Parliament will vote on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. What are the main challenges ahead of its implementation? And what can we do about them?

Looking forward to this evening discussion with HSS Europe and Loredana Teodorescu in Brussels!

The new chair of Young Labour is seemingly the son of Gary Lubner, who donated £4.5 million to the party.

I can't help but feel if that was the Tories it would somehow be a major issue for the Guardian, LBC &, dare I say, Young Labour...

We need a whole new party system, & PR.

Construction of the Italian centres for asylum seekers transferred to Albania has begun, but there are still important legal, ethical, and practical concerns with this plan.

I discuss these concerns in an interview with Henk Dheedene [De Tijd].

Good, wide ranging reflection by Leo Varadkar on his time in government. Most interesting was his comment that he’d been too cautious, and that advice from civil servants, academics was too conservative.

Argument: because migrants are liberals, mass emigration can cause democratic backsliding.

During a solar eclipse, the gaps between leaves on trees act as multiple pinhole cameras,

and each gap projects its own crescent-shaped image of the eclipsed sun onto the ground.
