We find that PAHs in smoke accumulate on indoor materials and persist for weeks at possible health-relevant levels. Good news - cleaning activities appear effective at removing PAHs.

A nice paper by Dustin Poppendieck and colleagues at National Institute of Standards and Technology showing that a live Christmas tree is a potent source of delicious smelling VOCs.

We found that smoke VOCs form surface reservoirs and thus persist indoors - meaning that air cleaners and ventilation don't permanently solve problems, but surface cleaning does!
