Brilliant article by Karl Anthony Mercer in the latest Museums Journal. Museums really need to be doing more to represent disabled and neurodiverse people in their collections, not just through temporary displays.

I know I haven't exactly been active here recently. Lots of reasons for that - some amazingly good, and some ridiculously bad.

But I'm still plugging away behind the scenes - it's just not getting social medied.

Honestly could not have noticed this at a better time! I needed to feel like my opinion matters right now.

Here's my opinion piece in the Museums Association journal on ensuring contemporary collections practice redresses historic imbalances & inequalities.

Surely not everything we turn our hand to in the cultural sector turns to gold, does it? The reason disabled people speak up on this stuff to say “that doesn’t work for me” is because treatment that *does* work for us is stigmatized by blanket advice like: Just try yoga! Just drink more water! This advice is constantly yelled at us, almost always unsolicited too.

Today I told a room of history students and lecturers that failing to include disabled people in the histories that they write means that their work will be incomplete and inaccurate and regardless of what grade I get for that presentation, I'm glad I got to say that 😎

My alarm clock this morning was picking my Parkinson's-frozen mother up off the toilet and hefting her to bed, buying her a bowl to wash in, cleaning her PJ's after she had an accident in them, and lost my car and house keys.

It is bizarre that food production (which keeps us alive) gets more pressure to reduce its footprint than fast fashion, totally unnecessary flights for holidays, the film industry & motorsports.
