Thought provoking day yesterday at the first of many meetings to develop a Prison & Penal Abolition network here in Ireland—grateful for a space to think about what we can build, grow, & repair when we come together to imagine a more just collective future 🌱 Interested? Join us!

Highlight of the weekend (and now my entire personality) was getting to meet Sing and Step with Padraig!!!!! We sang, we stepped, and we lilted to me espresso. 10/10 exceeded expectations.

There are worse places to park myself for the weekend and write a literature review 🌿🌊🌞✍️☕️📖

Fantastic ACJRD_IE lecture by maggie oneill #CeaseFireNow exploring women and the criminal justice system - with an emphasis on the need for a participatory, imaginative criminology that uses creative methods to meet people where they are at to build our collective social future together.

Many of those working with prison populations, eg prison chaplains, have been calling for a different model of restorative rather than retributive justice for many years. Recognising that causes of criminality are rooted in societal & poverty issues. messenger.ie/product/unhear…

While discussions in our January prison workshop were not recorded, Kathleen White generated a very helpful workshop report capturing questions, observations and responses.

May we never forget how students protesting genocide generated more outrage than the actual genocide itself - w/ universities unleashing police violence on students to uphold the militant, capitalistic status quo that allows genocide to happen with US tax dollars & govt support

Investment in prison expansion, instead of communities, will make this assumed “growing population” a self fulfilling prophecy. The reasons people end up in prisons are related to inadequate social supports. Pouring more funding into prison expansion will never be the solution.
