Juan Manuel Casanueva, who founded a Mexican non-profit focused on combating digital surveillance, told me he worries about the collective shrug over the prevalence of commercial #spyware . “In many cases, it has been completely normalized,” he said.

It marks the first time the US has imposed sanctions on individuals and companies associated with misuse of spyware, which can take over a phone or other electronic device, including accessing microphone recordings and other data.
