I’m excited to announce the Ida B. Wells Society investigative internship program is returning this summer! Journalism students interested in spending the summer on the investigative desks of some of the nation’s top newsrooms apply by Feb. 18! HBCU students especially encouraged.
More than anything I'm grateful for Kimbriell Kelly Kevin Merida for bringing me on and the inimitable Nick Baumann for teaching me so much about storytelling & making me a better writer (**hire him**).
I will miss this place. But I'll always root for LAT.
It's been devastating watching the volume of talent laid off Los Angeles Times over the last few days. I wish I could do more for my colleagues in the profession, but if you are an investigative or data reporter and want to teach brilliant students, I am hiring. higheredjobs.com/details.cfm?Jo…
My heart goes out to Los Angeles Times folks who've laid off. Here are some resources we cobbled together at the JOC slack a while back for folks who were laid off (will try to update this a bit, feel free to DM with more resources):

Too many other people to name here who helped me build the career I have now. Kimbriell Kelly and David Lauter for taking a chance on me as an intern out of college; Ben Muessig who helped me pivot to biz writing; Ryan Faughnder and Richard Verrier for teaching me about entertainment coverage.
I was laid off today at the Los Angeles Times. I'm really proud to have been part of the DC bureau and to have worked with so many dedicated and talented journalists - both in DC and LA - some who are among the more than 100 who received the same news today.
This is just gutting. Nick Baumann is one of the best editors I've ever gotten to work with.
Kimbriell Kelly is brilliant. erin b. logan is an incredible talent. And they're all SUCH NICE PEOPLE.
The amount of institutional knowledge the Los Angeles Times lost today is incalculable.
I'm still at a loss of what to say about these layoffs at Los Angeles Times. I'm still employed. But this is such a blow to journalism, not just in California but across the U.S. -- and at a critical juncture for what's left of democracy too.
Subscribe.
So grateful to my deputy bureau chief Nick Baumann , yes he also got laid off, and is amazing. He's led our 2024 coverage with distinction and is an AMAZING editor. Please hire him!!
