Happy Emancipation Day, DC!

Black communities in DC have celebrated Emancipation Day since the end of the Civil War. Today, the District celebrates for all this day represents. As we celebrate this year, may we all commit to advancing policies that will undo past harm.

Today marks the 162nd anniversary of DC Emancipation Day–honoring the day President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, which freed over 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia.

In observance of DC Emancipation Day, DCPS is closed today.

April 15th is a reminder that residents District of Columbia pay more federal taxes per capita than any state and more federal taxes overall than 19 states, while being denied the same voting representation in Congress. I urge all Americans to demand that Congress fix this.

I was happy to be a part of the team that organized this action. 44 people were arrested defending DC's Democracy
