Inclusion Canada is deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Robert Martin, a renowned disability rights leader & self-advocate from NZ.

As the 1st person w/ an intellectual disability to serve on the UN Committee, Sir Martin had a profound impact on the movement.

Fed Govt has polling that suggest an overwhelming number of Canadians think a $200 per month or $6/day is okay and they agree with Budget 2024.

Have your say.

Do you think $200/month or $6/day is adequate enough to bring out of poverty?

While tweets from parties in relation to the CDB are nice, we’d rather see Conservative, NDP, Green and Bloc leaders all stand in the House on the 29th and give their endorsement to government to fund the CDB to PBO maximum levels. You talk the talk, but will you walk the walk.

We'll deny you services, keep you in poverty, precarious housing/isolation, build inaccessible systems/communities for you to navigate, and when, because of these factors, you’ve hit your limit, we’ll suggest you exercise your “equality rights, autonomy and agency” by taking MAiD

Reality for many persons with disabilities (PwD). No support/endless waiting trying to get necessities of life, but no waiting for state sponsored euthanasia. Tell us again how PwD's aren't being targeted for MAID by being denied access to support.

Where is the advocacy here? How can this legislation still not be proclaimed? Ppl with intellectual disabilities are being paid slave wages. If we did this to any other equity seeking group there would be outrage. Shameful.

Provincial disability income support programs are well below the poverty level.

Animated graph shows, poverty line in teal blue, disability income support levels in dark purple, well below poverty line.

The aim is to fill in this gap, and bring at or above this line.

National legislation isn't clear on disability inclusive childcare but national obligations are - Canada agreed to follow UNCRPD. Provinces can go further. We call BC gov't to make it explicit. Rachna Singh Grace Lore Mitzi Dean

Write this down. Just as 'collateral damage' is used as a euphemism to down play the death/injury of civilians. MAiD is a euphemism created to mask the reality that MAID is 1) State assisted suicide or 2) euthanasia, and in both cases, 3) Non-culpable homicide.

Budget 2024 is April 16. As we approach budget day, the National Disability Network calls on the govt to adequately fund the CDB in Budget 2024. On Feb 9th we wrote to govt with our recommendations.

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) has the potential to assist persons with disabilities with some of their financial pressures and that's if it's $2,200, on top of current F/T/P benefits. The CDB is not the solution to MAiD, it won't fix poverty, lack of services or ableism.

The thesis is, maybe, just maybe, elites like lawyers and professors should listen to what the public has to say. The public isn't always right but their perspective is worth serious consideration, and should cause us to reflect on our own.
