Is This A Great Game, Or What?

The great Earl Weaver once told me that he would take “all shortstops” in the June draft “because they’re the best athletes on the field, they can play anywhere.” There were shortstops all over the field this morning in SD-LA game.

It’s nearly certain that Gerrit Cole and Blake Snell won’t start Opening Day. The last time the reigning Cy Young winners did not start Opening Day was 2005 (Clemens-Santana). Before that was 1982 (Valenzuela-Fingers, a reliever).

Mookie Betts moving from RF to SS - since 1900, two players have played 70 games at SS after playing 100+ games in the OF the prior season: Tom Tresh (1968) and Tony Womack (2000). Chris Taylor calls Betts “the best athlete I’ve ever played with.”

Saw the Yankees. A rival exec is worried that with Juan Soto and improved health, the Yankees might score 250 more runs than they did last year. Whoa. Six teams since 1900 have done that, the last being the 1977 White Sox.

Saw the Orioles. When Jackson Holliday was five, he could imitate the swing of so many great hitters. “I have lost that touch,” he said, smiling. Now he is 20. His swing is beautiful. Every movement he makes on a baseball field is fluid and athletic.

Today is Lou Gehrig Day. We remember a baseball legend who was baseball’s Iron Man. On May 2, 1939 his consecutive games streak ended. Fifty four years later on On May 2, 1993 Sarah Langs was born. She will be celebrated and honored tonight at Citi Field. Starsforsarah.org
