With the retirement of A.M. Rosenthal from The New York Times, the word “gay” can now be used by reporters as a synonym for “homosexual” without quotation marks. Rosenthal had banned such use for 15 years.

Eve Adams, a Polish-Jewish émigré, ran a tea room mostly for lesbians. She was arrested, tried, convicted of obscenity, & deported back to Poland. In 1943, she was arrested by the Nazis, transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and was murdered.
