As an undergrad I wanted to discover what would make my tutor the ice cold Dr Agatha Ramm emotional: the answer was Vichy France. Boy she hated them. Reading this still shocked Tim Stanley

Well here it is, the first comprehensive catalogue of the imagery of Mary I. Her image was so frequent I’ve needed two books 😉

Andrea is an important support to writers of the 17th century and it was a particular pleasure to talk to her about Henrietta Maria

I sound like I have sprung from the Edwardian era. Weird hearing one’s own voice. Slight slip when I refer to Buckingham as Charles!

Having my grandfather’s WWI service sword restored. His best friend Sir Iain Colquhoun was ( my father claims) the last man in British army to kill enemy with his sword & was known as ‘the bare foot Laird’. No idea if true! Saul David

Great to visit this 1,800 year old Roman statue - recently unearthed from the grounds of Burghley House by a digger during car park construction work!

It’s believed that it was brought to the house in the 1760s by the 9th Earl from a grand tour. It’s in amazing condition!
