During my 30s and 40s, I mostly needed EXTERNAL validation (publications, positions, compliments..)
In my 50s, I realized that INTERNAL validation is far more rewarding.
I wish I would have known it earlier !

Great talk on alcohol associated liver disease by Juan Pablo (JP) Arab, MD 🌟 in the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease!
I get many patients in my clinic with HIGH FERRITIN.
If I suspect alcohol, I don’t request HFE genetic tests the first visit. Instead, I assist them to stop drinking and I test FERRITIN again.
In most cases, iron tests normalize after abstinence.

In my view, these are the 🔝 priorities for reducing the burden of alcohol-related liver disease
Prevention: 🥇 primary, 🥈secondary, and 🥉 tertiary

Thanks Andrew Yeoman. Exceptionally proud of, and indebted to, our liver nurse specialists who run the Glasgow Liver Ambulatory Support Service (GLASS): patient-centred care reducing hospital stays and readmissions. stephen barclay NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Friends of Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Decreasing readmissions in cirrhosis is key in liver centers. There is an emerging role for SPECIALIZED NURSES.
This relevant study shows that a NURSE-LED clinic results in fewer liver-related readmissions and improved survival.

Brilliant talk by Maja Thiele on pitfalls of screening for alcohol liver fibrosis in primary & secondary care AASLD Foundation #TLM23
Care setting, pretest probability, test type, LSM by TE fluctuations, etc can influence sens/spec and rates of advanced fibrosis detection.
Great results from the first clinical trial testing NALTREXONE vs placebo in alcohol-related cirrhosis, today at #TLM23 :
🔸Naltrexone is well tolerated
🔸It favors abstinence
🔸It reduces by 50% new onset decompensation
