Everyone working with Jennifer Richards at Newcastle but especially in English at Newcastle and here in MEMS know what a brilliant colleague and researcher she is and how much our field is indebted to her scholarship. So happy to see her elected a Fellow The British Academy

In 1990 I was a very shy PhD student, grateful to have a chance to start again with The British Academy funding.

What an honour to be elected to a fellowship 30+ years later. Congratulations to all new 2023 fellows.

And the entry for the first woman apprentice bound to a stationer, Joanna Nye, in 1666. Like many young women apprentices, she was probably bound to his wife to learn a trade related to needlework in actuality, but it’s still a cool moment!

A lovely visit to the Tokefield Center, the library and archives of the Company. George Tokefield, Clerk of the company during the great fire of 1666, chose to put all the record books in a wheelbarrow and take them home, leaving the silver to melt.

Went to the Tynemouth quarterly book fair today and found a great janky book on the £2 table: a copy of an early 19c edition of poems, bound with Dolittle’s “Treatise on the Lord’s Supper” with ownership marks dated 1779
