PhD student Charlie McDonald is interested in understanding how and why new strains of foodborne bacterial pathogens develop. His project is called Microevolution of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium - molecular basis of emerging threats to human health. #mmbdtpstudents

PhD student Ryan’ project is titled Bacteriotherapy to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He is testing the viability of using selected combinations of microbial communities in therapies for this common condition for which no drugs are available. #mmbdtpstudents

PhD student Wing Koon's project is titled Rapid metagenomic strain profiling of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients via Nanopore sequencing. She's using the latest technology to identify gut bacteria associated with this often debilitating condition. #mmbdtpstudents

PhD student Dominic Fowler-Shorten’s project is called Investigating obesity induced gut microbiome changes in the development of multiple myeloma. The aim of his project is to define the role of changes in gut microbiota on the mechanisms behind this bone marrow cancer. #mmbdtpstudents

PhD student Ignacio is investigating how opportunistic bacteria evade the body’s natural defences and cause life threatening infections. His project is called Understanding how pathogenic streptococci sense and respond to metal intoxication. #mmbdtpstudents

MMB DTP second years, Alice Nisbet and Eleanor Hayles, are helping our new PhDs get to grips with comparative genomics in Week 4 of bioinformatics training.

PhD student jade’s project is called Investigating the mechanisms of action of intracellular anaerobic pathogens on human host cancer cell metabolic networks. She aims to uncover the role of bacteria in the development of advanced prostate cancer. #mmbdtpstudents

Last week our Alice Nisbet & Eleanor Hayles visited MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM with their Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP cohort to learn about the challenges & rewards of conducting research in #LMIC , & they presented at a student symposium where they & Gambian students discussed their projects & #PhD journey #Gambia
