Exciting day at our institute as 14 schoolkids from Jena and nearby got hands-on with research! From spicy mustard to DNA extraction, they explored it all. Ants' nestmate recognition and flies' odor identification also kept us buzzing! 🐜🧬🧪🔬 #ScienceFun
Congratulations to Iulia Barutia! She won the second price in a row this year in the best poster competition at the IMPRS symposium Sound_VibrationJENALAB & Silke Sachse @[email protected], Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology
Our recent IMPRS symposium celebrated academic excellence and collaboration. Congratulations to the winners of the presentation awards Marion (Margaux) Lemoine 🪰🦠❄️, Ronja Krüsemer, Johannes Körnig and Iulia Barutia, and all participants for showcasing outstanding research! #PhD #thueringenweltoffen
Thrilled to be part in this fantastic study!
Our Chemical analysis showed overlapping larval profiles but species-specific egg profiles, impacting oviposition preferences in Drosophila.

Researchers from our Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology including Nanji Jiang, Markus Knaden and Bill Hansson show in Nature Communications that elevated ozone levels remove mating barriers between Drosophila species and could contribute to global insect decline.

Happy to announce that Nomthi Khanyile defended her PhD thesis on 'Ecological implications of tyrosine-supplementing symbiosis in grain pest beetles' - supervised in the Insect Symbiosis Lab (Martin Kaltenpoth) (co-supervisors: Tobias Engl Nicole van Dam Enric Frago) - successfully! Congratulations Nomthi!🎓🎉
Yuko Ulrich and the members Yuko Ulrich lab are studying clonal raider ants and want to find out how diseases spread in communities. See the video broadcast in the Thüringenjournal:

Today we celebrate #WomensDay2024 . Yuko Ulrich, head of our independent Lise Meitner Group Social Behavior, emphasizes that despite many improvements for women there is still a long way to go in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. #IWD2024 Women's Day #InspireInclusion
In a new study in Functional Ecology Pamela Medina van Berkum, Sybille Unsicker et al. show that populations of ribwort plantain outside their native range are just as well or even better defended in comparison to native populations.
