The system is cooked and homes are unfairly distributed. It goes beyond Tasmania.

There are 166,000 listings across Australia compared to 122,000 unhoused people on census night.

This should be obvious, but the reason people are homeless isn’t because there aren’t enough homes.

There is not a single property across Australia – or even a room in a shared house – that's affordable for someone on youth allowance, according to a new report from support organisation Anglicare Australia abc.net.au/news/2024-04-2…

It's official - renting in Australia is cooked.

Our Rental Snapshot is out today. Out of 45,000 listings, 3 are affordable for someone on JobSeeker.

0 are affordable for someone on Youth Allowance.

It is a disgrace.

'What we really need from [govt] now is a solution that matches the scale of the [housing] crisis ... It's possible & doable & I really believe it's inevitable. The question is when & how much pain people have to endure before that happens' Maiy Azize on today's 7am

I’ll be on tomorrow’s episode of The Great Housing Disaster by 7am.

Tune in to hear about why we need to get profits out of housing - and why the government needs to step up and start providing homes itself.

Dear property commentators

Pointing out that half of all rentals go for below the median isn’t smart.

That’s just what the word median means.

More than a few people on here have said that they agree with the sentiment behind the things I’m saying but not the way I’m going about it - just wanna remind you that you’re welcome to do it differently x

Great way to think about housing and generational inequality. It's not that all young people are worse off. Instead inequality increases for each new generation. We are phasing in c19th inequality. That leaves 90% worse off (I imagine not as bad but same trend in Oz)

Goes without saying, but when we talk rental affordability, we are talking the people still in the rental market - not those who have dropped out because they can no longer afford it. Start talking about rental accessibility and what’s happening becomes even more bleak

People out of work have waited long enough for relief.

Small increases aren’t cutting it - Centrelink payments just keep falling further and further behind.

We’re calling on the Govt to above the poverty line.

Access to safe,, secure and affordable housing for all is one of the great political challenges.
I am honoured to be asked by Everybody’s Home to be a joint commissioner along with Professor Nicole Gurran on a People’s Commission into the housing crisis.

End the scam. The privatised employment services model needs to be burned to the ground and salt spread on its ashes.

Nobody should be kicked out of their home without a reason.

There’s no excuse not to fix this. The overwhelming majority of landlords want change.

The opponents might be powerful, but as we see again and again, they aren’t the majority.

Govt must stop kowtowing to them.

We need to end handouts for investors. In the midst of a housing crisis, it’s unfair that govt spends billions lining the pockets of people who don’t need it.

The tide is turning. Our poll from last week shows that most Australians want change

Redbrige polling. Overall, Australian sentiment indicates a desire to address certain tax benefits for property investors.

Another notable finding is that over 20% of borrowers and renters are currently allocating more than 50% of their weekly income towards repayments.
