I'm really feeling for everyone in Houston. What a wild storm. And it was an *unnamed* storm, which is a sign of how sudden it was. Reminds me of the two big unnamed storms that caused massive floods in Houston the two years before Hurricane Harvey.

Sheesh. I hope everyone is okay.

Also, this is just another reminder that the biggest cause of power outages is from transmission & distribution failure (b/c of windstorms, etc.).

This about sums it up. Reminds me of 1970s when Japanese manufacturers made lower-priced, fuel-efficient, reliable models that were desirable b/c of higher gasoline prices and American manufacturers didn't understand the risk and got complacent and lost significant market share.

For years, many in the power industry have been using the cell phone industry as sign of changes coming to electricity bills. This is a manifestation of that— check out Mark Chediak ‘s story. (Tesla, others offering flat fees for unlimited use at times in Tx is another)

People find this unpopular, but I think a higher fixed fee (for kW) and lower rate (for kWh) makes a lot of sense for a variety of equity, affordability, reliability and environmental reasons and will be a national trend.

Nothing says you believe in free markets quite like banning safe products that customers want.
