THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (81) Married lady conspires w/drifter to bump off husband. Grim, dull version of Cain bestseller, more explicit than 46 noir but far less effective. Lange well-cast & worth-watching but Nicholson all wrong for his role, Huston wasted as other woman.

9 TO 5 (80) Trio of ladies at Consolidated in tug-of-war w/piggish boss. After wicked opening, comedy goes from satire to slapstick. Dir. Higgins builds up such good will that not even repeat jokes or messagey 3rd act brought audiences down. Tomlin's wicked wit nearly saves it.

Gossip 2/78: Farrah Fawcett indifferent to Cheryl Ladd, but adds: 'I must admit I was surprised I was so easily replaced!'; Alice Cooper takes wife Cheryl w/him on tour: 'We wear the same size underwear!' Travolta & Tomlin in a love story? We hope for their sakes it's a comedy.

THE CELLULOID CLOSET (95) Doc about gays in cinema tiptoes thru movie history: lively, bright, bitchy, but also non-threatening. Extension of book has great celeb remarks & Tomlin narration, terrific clips & commentary, but seems incomplete today. Perhaps an updated vers. is due?

THE LATE SHOW (77) Over-the-hill detective in modern-day L.A. out to avenge murder of pal involved w/low-life crooks & stolen pussycat. Paean to Chandler somewhat convoluted, tho plot relatively unimportant since rich interplay btwn Carney & Tomlin carries it. Charmingly askew.
