An early start this morning for our Plymouth College cricketers en route to South Africa! A tour that has been disrupted by COVID and the original country’s political situation, how amazing to finally get our boys and girls away! Thank you Mr Mutlow, Mr Varcoe & Miss Odie!

As the sun sets on Plymouth College it’s a poignant moment to reflect on the futility of war and what lessons we can learn.

In the words of the Kohima Epitaph:

‘When you go home, tell them of us and say; for your tomorrow, we gave our today’

After visiting Langemark, Plymouth College headed to Vancouver Crossroads to commemorate the site of the first use of deadly poison gas in warfare. A moving tribute to the men who stood so bravely in the face of such barbaric weapons.

Day 2 of Plymouth College concluded with a visit to Mansell Copse, the Devonshire Cemetery on the Somme. An opportunity to reflect on what might have been had I been born 100 years earlier. ‘There, but by the grace of God go I…’

The final day of Plymouth College began with a visit to Langemark to see how German soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice are remembered. An important visit to help us appreciate the suffering that took place on both sides of the conflict.

Day 3 of Plymouth College continued with a visit to Poperinge visit the wonderful Tubby's Talbot House. In the midst of man’s inhumanity to man, the house reminds us of the good we can find in people even in the darkest of times.

The final visit on Plymouth College was to Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in the world, where nearly 12,000 soldiers - including OPM Club alumni - are commemorated. A demonstration of the scale of the suffering on the Western Front.
