For World Art Day we celebrate local historian, artist, and author James Bentley and his illustrated poem, “Mashin’ Days”. Written in the Buckley dialect, it details what courting was like in the early 20th century! D/JB/221

Oral health has come a long way since the 17th century, as can be seen from this teeth-cleaning recipe from c.1685! Would you be willing to swap out your regular toothpaste for a mix of “juyce of lemons…sage leafe and…faire water”? (D/E/1203)

Make sure you get a restful night’s sleep, otherwise you might find yourself falling asleep at the seaside and getting arrested like William Raynor, of Rhyl!

People can enjoy reading for many reasons. During WW2, children were encouraged to explore books as it was a ‘pleasant form of recreation’ and by reading, the hobby could ‘widen’ their ‘outlook’ of the world. What could you learn from a book? (D/BV/34).

As an archive, we tend to be full to the brim with ‘old stuff’! One interesting item is a document from 1679-80 containing sewn-in flannel swatches of varying colours. These pattern samples belong to a Mr. Dunn for use at the ‘Naples or Salerno faire’. D/SH/1169
