Important issue and one where there is room for improvement. Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) and Margaret Kelly have included comments on this issue in her reports . Open and early communication about escalation in care and ceiling of care with patients and families is essential .

Last year we published our investigation report into this issue. We found that too many patients are given little or no information once a healthcare referral has been made.
