Riley's parents in made things harder for her because they couldn't listen to her sadness. It was too scary to think that they had caused it. When adults have the courage & patience to *listen* to children's feelings, things change. Behaviour shifts. Trust renews.

Yes yes yes! We really do need to keep coming back to this.

Default institiutional blame about parents in this country is horrendous. The way services think about, talk about, write about, respond to parents is heinous. It has to stop.

I have definitely noticed this recent phenomenon where anxiety is used too often to describe what's going on in vague terms. Check out Marc Brackett & @YaleEmotion's Mood Meter as a great tool to help develop a more nuanced vocabulary for our emotions!

The next time someone says that alienating behaviours aren't a common problem - please refer them to our report showing that between 40 and 60% of separating parents report experiencing some form of this abuse!

1996, I left care and found myself in a bedsit. My first Christmas Day I had a Pot Noodle on my own. Fast forward 30 years and young people leaving care are doing the same. How can we let this happen? Children in care are still children.
