Really inspiring two days at about utilising eDNA in environmental monitoring! Talks and discussions highlighted the crucial role of science and evidence in our mission to restore nature 🌱🧬
And I learned the crucial role of calleighs at conferences…🕺😅

And we are done for this year.

Thanks so much to UHI for hosting us and Bernd Hänfling and the organising group for doing such a fantastic job.

See you all next year

Just got back after a fantastic 2 days at the conference where I presented my PhD research - using Oxford Nanopore Flongles for barcoding and . What a wonderful community, excited for next year already!

Next is Rein Brys explaining why ddPCR better for detection & quantification in studies. Standardising & validating by including internal +ve control w/ every sample, helps avoid false -ve. Improve detection by combining multiple assays, pick up higher DNA concs

Debbie Leatherland NE Chief Scientist explains importance of confidence in data for end-users. Open-access methods and clear, detailed reporting crucial for reproducibility and understanding. Without this, results can be undermined and uptake will be slower

Interesting talk by Nathan Griffiths on the use of integrating into site condition monitoring for freshwater fish. Can eDNA meet the necessary metrics & data recommendations needed? Need a baseline study and minimum sample numbers based on metrics needing to be met

Very interesting talk by Micaela Hellstrom on collecting from snow prints for multiple cryptic species eg polar bears. Less invasive than traditional methods & works well! Clean DNA collected and no effect from UV. Genotyping possible! Also looking at food signals

What’s in a pawprint? Micaela Hellstrom shows how pawprints and snow can provide insights on population genetics and diet for otter, lynx, snow leopard and polar bear!

Sadly no pizza analogies this year, but a great talk by Nathan Griffiths on how we can integrate eDNA into site condition monitoring for Arctic charr
