Hero of the American Revolution and the most popular man on the continent, George Washington’s triumph in the United States’ first presidential election was inevitable. Setting precedents with every action, Washington was inaugurated in New York #OTD in 1789.

Marking the end of American involvement in Vietnam, #OTD in 1975, an armada of helicopters carried 1,373 Americans & more than 6,000 Vietnamese out of South Vietnam to ships waiting off the coast, where decks were so crowded that some aircraft were pushed overboard to make room.

President Lincoln got a shower today. Our expert conservators gave the famous marble statue in the Lincoln Memorial a rinse, washing away dust and dirt. They even got behind his ears. 🚿🫧✨

#OTD in 1945, American & Soviet forces met at the Elbe River, cutting Nazi Germany in two and bringing the end of World War II in Europe closer. A bronze panel in the WWII Memorial shows the scene of soldiers from East & West meeting at a battered bridge near the city of Torgau.

A patrol ride on the @nationalmallnps is a great way for the officers in our Horse Mounted Academy to demonstrate their skills. The hard work these officers put in throughout this course will be celebrated at their graduation later this week!

This week, our Natural Resources team rescued a double-crested cormorant in the Tidal Basin. The bird had hooks from a lure stuck in both its feet with the line caught on the outlet bridge. They were able to remove the hooks and transferred the bird to a rehabilitation facility.

Daniel Chester French -who designed the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial- was born #OTD in 1850. He studied pictures & plaster molds of Lincoln's face to ensure its accuracy. It remains one of the greatest works of public art in the world. #WashingtonDC
