On Sheetala ashtami (Basoda)

In the cooler days

of March,

when the sun is but

a timid boy

who loves to play

peekaboo with the

undulating dunes,

and the village women,

in the brightest chunaris

with the mirror work

reflecting the soft

Holika Dahan

Sitting around the bonfire

made up of cow dung,

dry logs, spools of

cotton threads, turmeric

and Akshat rice,

we listen to the story of

Holika, the cold blooded

ogress of an aunt,

with absolutely no qualms

in trying to burn her

tiny nephew in the

अष्टांग योग (यम नियम आसन प्राणायाम प्रत्याहार ध्यान धारणा और समाधि) में यम (अहिंसा सत्य अस्तेय ब्रह्मचर्य और अपरिग्रह) के बाद दूसरा नियम होता है नियम भी पांच (शौच संतोष तप स्वाध्याय और ईश्वरधन या ईश्वरप्रणिधान) होते है नियम में सर्व प्रथम शौच (शुद्धता या सुचिता) होता है

etched in my heart,
of an eight-year-old me
carrying a wicker moon
basket full of bael patra
and hibiscus flowers,
accompanying my stout
and feisty Amma and
a very feeble but
kind-hearted baba,
while listening to
the story of how
Siva drank
