This is amazing. Not often you see Baldwin lost for words, bound up in a contradiction he can't resolve in theory.

Am I alone in preferring endnotes? I dislike having the flow of the writing/reading interrupted by footnotes and prefer to scan the endnotes once I've read the whole chapter/book. Endnotes at end of my chapter is my preference.

Strong rent controls + public housing decommodified and de-assetised British housing for decades before the 1980s. Unlike current subsidies for private housing (79% of all housing subsidy), investment in public housing pays itself back as well as deflating the housing economy.
