“As parents of small children, it has been unconscionable to live in a society that treats pregnant women and new mothers in such a brutal and inhumane way” - No Births Behind Bars

We are here outside the RCJ to call on the Sentencing Council to stop sending pregnant women and new mothers to prison. Babies and children need their mums this #MothersDay ! #nobirthsbehindbars
We just invaded the Houses of Parliament, singing loud and clear: #StopRosebank ! No new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea! The Rosebank oil and gas licenses will cause an extra 200m tons of CO2 emissions, while doing nothing to lower our energy bills #GreenEnergyisCheapEnergy
Great piece by Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) MP in PoliticsHome on the imprisonment of pregnant women & our campaign to end custodial sentences!
“I believe we now have the opportunity to take steps in this direction on a cross-party basis”

Appalling: The Observer finds 1 in 3 pregnant women in prison are being held pre-trial.
The practice of remanding pregnant women should be abolished, especially given the NHS acknowledges all pregnancies in prison are high-risk.

1 week left of Sentencing Council’s consultation on a new mitigating factor for pregnancy. We call for:
🛑ALL pregnant/postnatal women to be included, not just those ‘on the cusp’
🛑Recognition that all pregnancies in prison are high-risk
🛑🛑 & much more

Our whole campaign exists to show solidarity with Rianna Cleary and everyone who has ever been pregnant or in labour in prison. Whether on sentencing or remand this practice is inhumane and it must end now.

Rianna Cleary should never have been sent to jail while pregnant. Care in the community is the only way to give new mothers and babies a good start in life. We’re at Surrey Coroner’s Court today in solidarity with Rianna and Aisha calling for #NoBirthsBehindBars
Dear Alex Chalk KC MP please confirm you have received our letter regarding the imprisonment of pregnant women, delivered to @MOJGovUK by these children yesterday, the 4th anniversary of baby Aisha Cleary’s death at HMP Bronzefield. #NoBirthsBehindBars
