Like many spring flowers, the cowslip is associated with English folklore and tradition, including adorning garlands for May Day & being strewn on church paths for weddings. It has many folk names including 'key of heaven', 'paigles', 'bunch of keys' & 'herb Peter'.

Creating woodland should be more than just planting trees. Think of structure, soil conditions and location. Avoid important habitats such as species-rich grasslands and deep peat and try to link in with existing woodlands or hedgerows.

The emperor moth is a large moth; the female can have a wingspan of up to 10cm, but the male is smaller, with large, feathery antennae. During the day, males can be seen flying swiftly about and can be mistaken for butterflies.

Oystercatcher Island at Bakethin had it’s annual vegetation clearance recently. Removing last summer’s grass and moss growth makes sure there is a good area of shingle for Oystercatchers to nest on. Many thanks to the intrepid volunteers who rowed over to carry out the work!
