It's a tension with any 'win' in policy or practice that for those in the system it's long overdue, so celebration is bittersweet.
Dr Laura Abbott & I made this film about pregnancy in prison in 2019. 2 babies died after that.
Remembering those babies & their mothers today 💔

'For a pregnant woman or mother, the punishment of prison is doubled'
Recent polling from Survation., for Level Up & One Small Thing, found 53% believed a new mother should not be sent to prison with her infant if a community alternative was available.

“Prison is not a safe place for mother or baby due to the limited healthcare available. These risks make a custodial sentence a disproportionate punishment for a pregnant woman.” Good to hear that the public agree 👇🏼
