While I’m busy recommending podcasts by ⁦Anna Geiger⁩, I’ll add this to the list - Anna’s conversation with ⁦Nate Joseph⁩ on supporting teachers to be confident and informed research consumers. A valuable and nuanced listen. podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/tri…

It was a pleasure to have this conversation with Karen Dudek-Brannan on everything from using social media to share research to displacement of responsibility for children’s reading success from teachers to parents - and much else!

Today I attended the retirement celebration for my school friend, Her Honour, Magistrate Jenni Bowles. We’ve collaborated over the yrs on Judicial College training on language skills of vulnerable children & adolescents. Her work on “crossover kids” leaves a significant legacy 🌻

''However, after accounting for variations in maternal language, storybook exposure was not a significant predictor of children’s outcomes. In contrast, direct literacy instruction remained a predictor of children’s reading/spelling skills.'' Puglisi et al. 2017

10 years ago I would have sworn that I WAS teaching explicitly.

That was before I started using Direct Instruction and learnt what explicit teaching CAN look like.

Students are more engagement & actively learning. ALL students should be able to benefit from explicit teaching.

The key identifier that we can use to distinguish a student learning English who may struggle to learn to read from one who will not are word-level measures.

This video is a 🙌 investment of 8 mins of your time. I’ve added it to my most recent blogpost on the folly of sending bulk sets of so-called sight-words home for parents to teach to their children. This practice needs to be retired.

New article in ILA 'The Reading Teacher' by Devin Kearns and Matthew J. Cooper Borkenhagen that's worth reading. (Paywall - sorry!) ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…
Expands on important stuff about how people learn that Mark Seidenberg talked about in Ep 10. of Sold a Story.
