6/n. In other situations traffickers simply mis-declare species on permits. Investigations by World Parrot Trust and @bbcclick last year revealed how traffickers exploit weakness in permitting systems in Bangladesh to import African #Greyparrots .

5/n. Other evidence indicates traffickers exploit large-scale legal imports of birds into Bangladesh to traffic threatened & protected wildlife. In June Lear’s macaws were found concealed within shipments of legal birds entering BD from EU.

4/n. Network analysis based on details within reports revealed West Bengal state as a key hub in trade with strong links to neighbouring #Bangladesh . Illegal trade is likely linked to long land border combined with, permissive regulatory environment and lax law enforcement in BD.

3/n We found 109 bird seizure-events involving over 25,000 birds from 58 species. Most seized birds were #parrots but a broad diversity of native and exotic bird species were involved in seizures. Species accumulation curves suggest species diversity is greater than we observed.

2/n. Keeping, breeding & selling of native & exotic birds thrives in India. India reports few imports of CITES-listed birds, yet a 2020 voluntary disclosure scheme received over 32,000 declarations, many for CITES-listed birds. A few minutes online reveals the scale👇.
