This week, on India Inside Out, links to some of the interviews I've been doing for CASI, looking at insightful research on India's political economy from Yamini Aiyar, Rachel E. Brule, Pavithra Suryanarayan and Francesca R. Jensenius:

Cannot recommend this paper enough. One of the few that takes the agency of women and their role in building organizations seriously. Must read to understand the organizational basis of female partisan support for the right wing in India.

Yes, we previously have not discussed the organizational machinery of the BJP in mobilizing women's vote in India - and I have a paper that does exactly that -- cambridge.org/core/journals/…

| Pavithra Suryanarayan on the BJP, 'Social Status' and Anti-Redistributive Politics

How is the ruling BJP – which has historically been ambivalent about social justice politics – mobilising poorer voters, especially among the upper castes?

Bravo Poongodhai! A product of Chennai’s corporation schools, and an inspiration for us all. We have not heard the last of this powerhouse. So incredibly proud! Public schools ROCK!

Depressing tweet from a congressman. The argument “I can’t understand it so it’s bad,” would apply equally well to most e.g. math PhD theses, which the congressman doesn’t seem to be attacking.

Good discussion here that ultimately shows econ & other depts. are relatively more conservative in partisan makeup. Ideologically likely even more if probed on say tax & transfer policies. But ideology of universities is not characterized by econ departments, but liberal arts.

Economics, law and business school faculty manage to earn a king’s ransom but also disappear from public consciousness or perception of “elite colleges.” It’s truly a marvelous gift they possess.

Given India's elections have turned to questions of redistribution and social justice, apt that our fourth interview in the CASI 🇮🇳 Election Conversations 2024 series features Pavithra Suryanarayan about her research into 'social status' politics and much more:

I spoke to Rohan Venkat about my ongoing book project on social status and anti-redistributive politics in India. I did not expect the Indian elections campaigns to speak so directly about identity and redistribution, particularly taxation.

Earlier today, I read the election manifesto of the Congress party in detail. At no point does it say that the Congress will i) undertake a property/wealth survey of all Indians (only a caste census), ii) will transfer Hindu wealth to Muslims (only economic empowerment of lower

The Covid second wave hit Indians really badly.
The Modi govt, as per WHO, did not just underestimate the death count nearly ten-fold, but now tom toms its success at handling Covid.
