It is impossible to overstate the contribution of unseen, unheard women in health and care. How much the lives of everyone using the NHS, or who will ever need to, depends on the labour and lives of women who too often go unrecognised and are too often undervalued. 3/4

Around 60% of informal carers are women. Women who labour for low (or no) wages. Women who work in poor, hard conditions. Women without agency and platforms. Women who are unseen and unheard in national discourse. Women whose sweat, tears, backs and hand we rely on. 2/4

As we approach #IWD2024 and we talk about the state of health and care now and into next year and beyond, we are talking about the labour and lives of women. The NHS workforce is 77% women, the UK care workforce 81% women and the global healthcare workforce 67% women. 1/4

We are delighted that NHS England have included speaking up in their competency framework for leaders.

This highlights the role of leaders in creating safe speaking up cultures, & that they speak up and challenge appropriately.

This year we are raising awareness of the barriers to speaking up, and how we can all play our part at removing them.

Insufficient funding means hospices are struggling to keep up with rising costs.

We've calculated that England’s adults’ hospices have faced a real-terms cut in their Government funding of £47m in the past 2 years.
