Major Geoffrey Compton-Smith of the Royal Welch Fusiliers was executed by the IRA.

His final letter said,
'I should like my death to lessen rather than increase the bitterness which exists between England & Ireland'.

Amgueddfa RWF Museum Bosnia, personal opinion, has been hidden compared to all the other conflicts in the last 44 years. I recall the 1st British soldier who died was RWF attached to the Cheshire’s. I also assisted in his repatriation. National service is also deserving of recognition.

From , Caernarfonshire (now Gwynedd), he served with the RWF.

Buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, he died in June 1916 aged 21.

Inscription:

GWYN EU BYD Y RHAI ADDFWYN

(BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN).
