Looking back on Queensland CHO Dr John Gerrard’s statements about C-VID, it is startling how wrong he has been.

His advice has been wildly optimistic and at odds with the emerging science.

Watch to the end to hear what experts think of his views.

Short 🧵

Many use today as a day to mark significance in the Corona pandemic.

I welcome any way in which we can raise attention to COVID-19, to remember our loved ones lost-and still losing- but also to ensure that we continue to act to tackle the current threat of COVID-19.

In most states, schools haven’t been given good guidance on how to deal with COVID, or even why they should care about it.

This course will help them provide a safer environment for kids and teachers.

“We don’t let our kids get sunburnt because of the risk of skin cancer. We shouldn’t let them get infected with SARS-CoV-2 either, because we know it can have serious long-term effects.” bit.ly/3UIFgQf

Hayley Gleeson I don't need to imagine losing a loved one to nosocomial Covid.
A close relative of mine died last year after being infected with SC2 on the ward.

On 04 February 2024, 72% of inpatient Covid cases here in Wales were the result of nosocomial infection...

imagine losing a loved one because they caught covid in hospital, a place they should’ve been safe.
is it ok for kids to catch covid in ICU? cancer patients? nurses?
as hospitals roll back precautions, too many are catching the virus and dying, doctors say

A 'curve ball' alright, with substantial implications for what we might expect in the future - dramatic 'omicron-like' shifts can & presumably will keep happening - didn't know that bf Pirola/JN.1. But even without it, we had a problem that demanded the same response. John Flint

This doesn't mean it's no longer exceptional, requiring doing a lot. Data hard to find but 2023 toll will be v large (8,000 XS deaths to 31 July). US ahead on vax (XBB) & their availability (rec for everyone >6 months), airborne controls & testing for example. Why so different?

The dismantling of the Australian COVID-19 case reporting is hiding the scale (or even existence) of the current wave of community transmission sweeping across the country.

And ~50,000 or so Australian's lived bc the country took a path to live without C0VID. Wasn't easy, border closures & some major lockdowns (esp. Melb & Syd), but most people lived virus- & LD-free for all of 2020-21.

And there was no 'catch-up' death - debunking a common myth. All countries have suffered similarly (albeit terribly) since re-opening/omicron, ie, no relationship to how much excess death beforehand. Australia has had 30,000+ excess deaths since re-opening, & this is ongoing.

Age Care data reveals what community surveillance would be showing us - if we still did it properly.

The case numbers are rapidly on the rise.

Ignoring SARS-2 is not an effective public health strategy.
