Update: there are now 305 publications/organizations/news channels listed. I added a column for people to describe the nature of the assignment and there's still a column for any higher up at the outlet to comment on their practices. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

Love this. There’s a glancing reference to data quality in my talk but not enough time to go into detail — this perfectly illustrates why it’s important!

Sinéad O'Connor was brilliant, smart and courageous as fuck. I hope she’s remembered for her sense of humour, too.

Here she is attending an anti-Sinéad O'Connor demonstration in disguise. Truly one of a kind 🖤

Same problem as comedy, theatre, film, any form of writing: there's enough people who want to do it that the industry can just chuck 'em in the furnace for fuel, because there's always a queue.

I mean, I don't disagree with this piece but what it basically comes down to is that people at the top of publishing are creaming off large profits by grossly overworking staffers and not giving a damn for the well-being of authors.

It's all completely horrible but the mass email thing is especially sticking with me because what the fuck. Mass emails aren't for things like TELLING PEOPLE THEIR IMPRINT IS DEAD NOW

Definitely! I’m always hoping to see someone I know, plus I’d love to be there myself someday.

(I have been in a couple of journal article acknowledgements, which is always super exciting.)

I am really worried that companies are going to use AI audiobook narration as a wedge issue to try to break novelists off from other creatives.

I am currently sitting on a pretty sizeable backlist of novels I can't afford to put into audio, so I understand the temptation. But NO

🚨ARTISTS BEWARE🚨

Last night I was contacted by the CEO of a company called Scopio, under the guise of a job opportunity. Immediately I sensed something fishy, but I sent my usual new client response that I 'd be capable of doing the job and would like more information.

If you’re a scholarly author who wants to write a trade book, I strongly recommend this presentation by Jane Friedman.

You’ll learn what big publishers are looking for and how to frame your project (in a much different way than you may be used to)
