National parks overhaul needed now!

That starts with restoring biodiverse woodlands, rewetting peatlands and establishing a proper right to roam.

For nature, climate and people.

Our national parks can be places of nature recovery, public access and sustainable livelihoods; instead they are places of extinction, exclusion and loss.

We need to achieve 30% by 2030 managed effectively for nature in the UK - and this to be prominent in all General Election manifestos. We are a long way off.

4/4 We have some significant new opportunities through our Exmoor Pioneers National Lottery Heritage Fund bid and Reviving Exmoor’s heartland Landscape Recovery project. We have big ambitions set out in our Nature Recovery Vision & our emerging new Partnership Plan for Exmoor.

3/4 Our work is hinged on partnership working and our ability to influence. We’re proud to see our Nature Recovery Vision profiled in the report and we’re excited to develop projects such as the creation of new temperate rainforest on Exmoor and increasing wild flower meadows.

2/4 We have to balance this with our other priorities, and we have limited powers and tools to directly deliver change, with around 90% of the National Park in private ownership. We are also held back by diminishing resources (a real terms cut of over 50% in the last 10 years).

This makes for an incredibly depressing read. You would think our most precious and important nature reserves would be the most protected areas of all - yet this healthcheck from Campaign for National Parks finds the very opposite. They are in an even worse state than everywhere else.

Great to see South Downs National Park welcoming our Health Check report, highlighting what's being down in the Park, what more is to be done and how our reforms could be taken forward practically.
