@S_T_Johnston

Lecturer at UniMelb. Using maths to understand biology, from the very small (nanoparticles 🧪, cells 🦠) to the very large (whales 🐳). Views my own.

New research from Science at Melbourne's Stuart Johnston shows that as noise from shipping and other human activities surges, whales will find it increasingly harder to migrate successfully.

Whales have to put up with the constant noise caused by human activity in the oceans. In this episode we talk to Stuart Johnston about using maths to understand how noise impacts whales, and how to lessen the disruption we cause. plus.maths.org/content/how-do… Isaac Newton Institute

New preprint!

We (myself + Mat Simpson) derive some exact solutions for PDE models of diffusive processes that occur on heterogeneously growing domains.

Have a read here: arxiv.org/abs/2304.09451

Are you interested in the impact of nanomaterials on cells? Come and do an PhD with Ivan Kempson, Alex Tam and me at UniSA in UniSA Future Industries Institute A great opportunity to work closely with experimentalists.

can anyone recommend a modern undergrad math biology text? I love the classics (Edelstein-Keshet, deVries, Murray) but I feel they're too focused on model analysis rather than the holistic process of model construction + data comparison that current math bio often entails

Great to have this preprint out, based on research Celia did with me during an undergraduate project.

We looked at how much heterogeneity in nanoparticle dosage is unavoidable - even if all cells are identical - with both simulation and analytic results.
