Communicable disease continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality globally, finds new GBD study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. In 2019, an estimated 704M DALYs were associated with 🦠85 different pathogens🦠, including 309M in children under 5 🔗 ms.spr.ly/6189YB1Fz

The Lancet Infectious Diseases Three leading pathogens were found to be responsible for more than 50 million DALYs each in 2019: #tuberculosis (65.1M), #malaria (53.6M) and HIV/AIDS (52.1M), malaria being the leading pathogen for DALYs in children under 5 (37.2M)

This is happening now & is very exiting with 364 participants connected. Targeted next-gen sequencing has great potential in diagnosing drug resistant TB (DR-TB), including resistance to new drugs. Over half of people with DR-TB are currently being missed & this is unacceptable.
