In November managers Oxford Brookes declared 48 jobs “at risk” with 20 needing to be cut. Our campaigning, negotiating & balloting have reduced the number of compulsory redundancies to two. We still intend to reduce that number to zero. 1/2

This is very bad news. We read here that Universities UK has already written to the government requesting that post-92 universities be allowed to leave this defined benefit pension scheme, since the DfE has refused to fund the 5% rise in employers' contributions.

'With massive redundancies announced at this London institution, is it the canary in the coalmine?' It's good the Guardian is covering the disaster at Goldsmiths, and elsewhere. But it's also belated: the coalmine is littered with dead and dying canaries. theguardian.com/education/2024…

Hannah offering up sorely-needed writing and thinking as losses accumulate. Speaking both to my mood and current writing - the book’s already on order.

If you ever develop a literary side-interest, may it not be in the ridiculously prolific, notably long-lived J B Priestley.

We were pleased to see that OFSTED has focused on English in their new Telling the story report. The report highlights the need for our subject to be broader and richer: we agree wholeheartedly.

However, we have some concerns englishassociation.ac.uk/our-response-t…

Brilliant work (as ever!) from Kelechi Anucha on the ‘After the End’ project on how public health emergencies have narrated their endings.

'Storying Self-Harm'
I'm really pleased to share this essay recently published in The Lancet, which discusses some key insights from my PhD research into fictional depictions of self-harm, & how these narratives intersect w/ our experiences of self-harm:

Want to know why Michelle Donelan was forced to make an extraordinary apology to two academics earlier today?

It's a bizarre tale involving Policy Exchange, a secret government dossier and a libel case paid for by the taxpayer

A short thread (1/10)

Science minister Michelle Donelan forced to withdraw false allegations about academics who tweeted in solidarity with Palestinians.

“It is extraordinary that a minister should be guided by a lobby group into making serious false allegations” theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

Will Donelan explain why she made a public attack on academics without reading what they had retweeted? Will UKRI explain why it went straight to a lengthy investigation process without testing if there was a case to answer? Will I be rejoining the AHRC peer review college?
