New dataset alert: The episodes of regime transformation (ERT) dataset captures 680 episodes of regime transformation from 1900 to 2019 and offers novel insights into regime change over the past 120 years.

I think this is the best/most you can do with V-DEM data so I'm glad to see this paper written. Discerning and categorizing 'episodes of regime transformation' in a bandwidth of set parameters is a useful descriptive exercise to help identify new puzzles & prepare to dig deeper.
