Mayor Khan knows very well that Silvertown will increase traffic & pollution - because we've explained to him how TfL''s own modelling shows that. He's deliberately misinforming Londoners about environmental costs of his own disastrous decision to build this road. Zoë Garbett

Leo Murray @[email protected] Silvertown Tunnel though…
City Airport expansion though…
ULEZ is excellent for cleaner air, but he needs to stop muddling clean air with climate policies in his PR.
We must reduce driving & ban SUVs in cities for *both* clean air and climate.

So as per his climate manifesto launch yesterday, Sadiq is explicitly not abandoning his net zero 2030 pledge. The situation is he is promising a lot of good stuff which I warmly welcome, but taken together does not add up to achieving net zero in 2030. Meanwhile…

Grateful that Khan has been asked this question but his response is nonsensical.

As Stop Silvertown Tunnel Traffic and Pollution have pointed out, TfL’s own modelling forecasts the tunnel will increase congestion and pollution.

Induced demand means that expanding roads doesn’t solve congestion! (See M25) 1/3

Khan says won't increase emissions amid claims 'children would breathe in fumes'.
He also claims there are 2 lanes reserved for buses.
He doesn’t admit:
HGVs will use the lanes.
20-30,000 vehicles a day will drive into residential Newham mylondon.news/news/transport…

🚛 Any reduction will be followed by an overall increase in traffic levels.

The ten point plan certainly won't do it. In fact, given the substantial increases in emissions from enabling expansion of CIty Airport (-800,000 tonnes/year) and opening Silvertown, Khan's 3 terms in office will still likely see a net increase in emissions.

Sadiq Khan and Ed Miliband’s stance on the Silvertown Tunnel on the day they talked climate change and net zero in London.

The mayor’s critics have said that the project will lead to tens of thousands of children breathing in more toxic fumes. mylondon.news/news/transport…

Adam Toms Green campaigners? Campaigners *across the board* (even 4 Labour Councils) have challenged Sadiq Khan TfL for several years. 1000s *extra* HGVs per day will come to Greenwich & Newham. Please do check out Stop Silvertown Tunnel Traffic and Pollution.

Mayor Sadiq Khan and Ed Miliband just aren't telling the truth here. TfL's own analysis shows clearly that opening Silvertown increases local pollution and carbon emissions, with or without a toll. And Sadiq Khan knows this, because we've shown that analysis to him.

Helena Horton And the centre-left The Guardian refuses outright to print the fact that, with his decisions on airport expansion and road-building, 'climate activist' Sadiq Khan is in fact locking in *increased* CO2 emissions for decades to come. Is that any better?

Labour Assembly members have repeatedly prevented the London Assembly properly holding Sadiq Khan to account for spending £2bn of public money on new road infrastructure that undermines his own key policies for no benefit. Even if you vote for a Labour Mayor, don't vote for them.

Under Sadiq Khan's own plans, it's exactly tube and bus fare-payers who will be paying back the cost of building Silvertown. PFI repayments will be made from TfL general income - which mostly comes from fare-payers, not motorists - even if Blackwall/Silvertown are tolled.

Too much soft ball over here. If we'd had stronger activism we wouldn't exist. Locals rely on 'local' politicians to stand up for them. How can they do that if they don't want to upset the mayor?

If a Labour mayor’s track record is bad now, what chance do we have in the future?! There are other examples of him ‘playing softball’ without offering proper reference to what Londoners want or vote for. In my experience this has been in the nature of this party.
We absolutely…

Really interesting thread. Suggesting the ongoing closure of to vehicles is actually not “broken Britain”, but a failure of us all to understand this was *never* a bridge for vans, buses and cars. It is now returning to its proper function

Human rights violated by Swiss inaction on climate, ECHR rules in landmark case.

Weak government climate policies violate fundamental human rights, the European court of human rights has ruled. So surely weak Mayoral policy or action does too? theguardian.com/environment/20…
