Despite global declines, China's coal construction surged in 2023, w/70.2 GW of new starts — China's highest annual capacity since 2015 & 19x more than the rest of the world.

This disparity underscores China's unique position in the coal sector and its impact on global dynamics.

The future of the global coal fleet hinges on new construction starts, a key growth indicator.

Outside China, starts declined for the 2nd consecutive year, hitting a record low since 2015. This underscores a shifting landscape in the coal sector.

Low retirement rates in 2023, particularly in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and Europe 🇪🇺, contributed to the rise in coal capacity.

But this trend could reverse as retirement rates are expected to pick up speed. And growth may slow if China 🇨🇳 meets its 2025 target of shutting down 30 GW.

🔎Data in the Global #CoalPlant Tracker for 2023:

- 69.5 GW of capacity came online
- 21.1 GW was retired
➡️ resulting in a net annual increase of 48.4 GW, the highest since 2016, bringing the global total capacity to 2,130 GW.

🇨🇳 China led the surge w/47.4 GW of new capacity.

🌏 Not to mention a small uptick globally for the 1st time since 2019.

However, the accelerated growth in coal capacity may be short-lived, as low retirement rates in 2023 that contributed to coal’s rise are expected to pick up speed.

🔺 Global coal capacity went up 2% in '23
🇨🇳 China drove 2/3 of new additions
🔽 Outside 🇨🇳+🇮🇳 total proposed capacity at lowest since data collection began
