We published our editorial calling for an end to the PPS teachers strike online on Friday. It's in print today, on The Oregonian's front page. We rarely publish front-page editorials, but the impact of this strike on students and the community merit it. Schools must be reopened.

Good morning! It’s the first day of school Portland Public Schools
and we are ready to welcome back our 44,000 students! The red carpet awaits students here at Sitton Elementary, where Principal Barry & fourth-grader Oliver are sharing tips for making school a positive experience.

New Grade 6 students getting the Kellogg campus all to themselves today to meet & hear from school staff, and learn their way around the rebuilt middle school.

And meet new school leaders Principal Thai Nguyen (a former student at Kellogg years ago) and A.P. Claudia McClellan!

I had the opportunity to join families at Cesar Chavez K-8 to celebrate the first day of school, and to introduce new principal Jorge Meza, who is a former teacher at the school! He shared his personal story & commitment to ensuring every student is successful. #TeamPPS
