On the 7th of April 1944, 80 years ago, Alfred Wetzler and Rudi Vrba went into their hiding place in #auschwitzbirkenau . Three days later they escaped and managed to get to #Zilina , where my mother, Dr Gertrud Friedmann, then 15, brought them food. Here she recalls what happened.

It was moving and helpful to be part of this...feeling that all the information I've collected over the last 30 years, and was scattered, was now all coming together in a huge archive in France, where it belongs. History being told and retold.

We are so sorry to hear this news. Hella Pick CBE was a true star. We were with her so recently in Berlin at the Deutscher Bundestag. Here she is, with Alf Dubs. We are so grateful for her testimony and our thoughts are with her family.

Shocked to hear that the amazing Hella Pick CBE died. I was fortunate to have been able to interview her for AJR Refugee Voices Archive and on other occasions. We had planned another interview in May. Together with Alf Dubs and The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) Michael Newman in Berlin, January 2024. RIP Hella.

April 7, 1944: Gerta Vrbova's future husband Rudolf Vrba enters a hollowed-out space in a woodpile in Auschwitz with Alfréd Wetzler. They spent 3 days hiding there before escaping to write the Vrba–Wetzler report, a detailed description of the camp.
